Section 1A Playoffs: Elko rallies to defeat Faribault 7-6

It has been a Cinderella like run for the Faribault Lakers. Getting hot at the end of the regular season, the momentum has carried into the playoffs. Wins last week over Hampton and Rochester had the Lakers a win away from the Class A State Tournament with DRS rival Elko providing the next road block. The roadblock managed to stop Cinderella's carriage as the Lakers fell a run short, 7-6. With the loss, Elko gains a berth in the State Tournament, while the Lakers will have to come back through the loser's bracket.

The Lakers jumped to a 3-0 lead with a solo home run by Jack Jandro in the second inning. Joe Grote followed with a solo shot in the third inning. Later in the third a Dylan O'Neil single plated Riley Palmer.

The Express got on the board in the bottom of the third. With two runners on base, a grounder was first bobbled then thrown away to allow Michael Fredrickson to score.

Faribault countered in the top of the fourth. Former Laker Jake Petricka entered the game and was treated rudely by his former mates. Jandro doubled and scored on a Grote infield single two batters later. Drew Conrad and Austin Rendler both followed with RBI singles.

After Lakers starter Mason Miller threw three scoreless innings, the Lakers went to Carter Quinlan. Chase Hentges hit a solo home run with two outs. The next two batters reached but did not score.

In the fifth, Cal Ronay doubled to lead off the inning and scored after three straight walks, a fielding error scored another run to make it 6-4. After a sacrifice fly made it a one run game, an infield single tied the game at six.

Ronay began the sixth with another double and scored on a Joe Anderson single to give Elko their first lead, 7-6. But the Express ran themselves out of the inning getting a runner thown out at the plate on a double steal and another runner thrown out third trying to steal.

There was no scoring the rest of the way, the Lakers had two men on in the ninth but could not score against Petricka.

Jamie's Delivery Deliverymen of the Game.

1. Jack Jandro- Faribault. The Lakers center fielder got the Lakers on the board with a solo home run in the second inning. Jandro had four hits for the day including a double that scored in the fourth inning.

2. Cal Ronay- Elko. The Express lead off hitter doubled in the fifth and sixth innings, with his run in the sixth being the game winner.

3. Jake Petricka- Elko. The former Laker was touched for three runs in the fourth inning, but did not give up any runs in the final five innings to allow the Express to come back for the win.

Notes:
With the loss, the Lakers will face New Ulm at Bell Field on Friday night at 7:30. The winner of that game will get a State Tournament berth, with a seeding game scheduled for the next afternoon between the winner of Rochester vs. New Market. So it's a chance for the Lakers to avenge their loss to the Brewers in the 2023 State Tournament.
