Faribault Lakers Baseball: Prior Lake Jays outlast Lakers 12-11
It was a long night at Bell Field for all involved, but the Prior Lake Jays eventually were victorious on the strength of a three run ninth inning.
After the half hour rain delay, Faribault got to work in their half of the first inning. With two out, Aiden Tobin walked, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a fielding error that helped Joe Grote reach. Austin Rendler followed with a single to plate Tobin.
After Grote pitched his way through a bases loaded situation in the top of the second, the Lakers rang the bell again as Grant Koch walked and was driven in on a Jack Jandro double to make it a 2-0 game.
Faster than a Faribault downpour, the Jays came back to take the lead. The Jays filled the bases with one ball leaving the infield. Linus Fleek was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. Then on a wild pitch, another run was plated. On the same play the ball got away from the Lakers and the third run of the inning scored with Fleek moving to third.
In the Lakers half of the fourth it was small ball as the bases were loaded by the benefit of a walk and two bunt singles. A wild pitch scored Mason Conrad with the tying run. Jack Jandro grounded to short to plate Jordan Nawrocki. With the bases loaded again with two outs, Grote was hit by a pitch to give the Lakers a 5-3 lead.
The Jays struck back immediately in the fifth. with the bases loaded as three of the first four batters walked, a single to left field by Joe Stelzig was misplaced allowing two runs, to score. On a wild pitch with Joe Robey at the plate a third run scored. Lance Goeschel followed with a sacrifice fly to score another run. Followed by a Jackson Golberg single to make it an 8-5 game.
In the Jays sixth with fireworks going off around town, with the bases filled via walks, Stlelzig grounded into a fielder's choice that was a scoop at first away from being an inning ending double play.
The Lakers did get one back in their half of the inning. With the bases loaded Grote grounded into a potential 1-2-3 double play but the throw got away from the first baseman allowing Drew Conrad to score.
In the Lakers eighth, Zander Fitzsimmons singled and ended scoring on a wild pitch to draw the Lakers, followed by an RBI single by Grote to get the Lakers within a run. With one out a wild pitch allowed Tobin to score to tie the game at nine. Grote scored on yet another wild pitch and like that the Lakers had the lead for the first time since the first inning.
The Jays however figured if they weren't going to be able to be home until after midnight, why not try to win it. After a walk and an error, Lance Goeschel doubled to deep left to tie the game. With runners on second and third, Jackson Golberg flew out into the fog in center field to give the Jays the lead back. Ross Hebel drove in the third run of the inning with a single with two outs.
But the Lakers would not go down with a walk or two. Two walks to lead off the inning coupled with a wild pitch and passed ball scored Fitzsimmons to make it a one run game. The Lakers had the bases loaded after, surprise, a couple of walks. But Ross Hebel came in to make a one out save to close the game.
