Faribault Lakers Baseball: Lakers battle hard but fall late to Union Hill 6-4

You have to give the Lakers credit, they've played the stronger teams well in 2025. They were tied 4-4 in the seventh but the Bulldogs scratch a run across in the seventh and add another in the eighth on a Conrad Masberg pinch hit home run to take down the Lakers 6-4 at Bell Field on Friday night.

 Union Hill started out as hot as the weather on a steamy Friday night at Bell Field scoring three runs. Tomas Lee singled and scored on a Nate Lee double. Henry Novak drove in a run on an infield single, while Lee scored on the back end of a double steal.

The Bulldogs bit again in the second inning. Jack Becker singled, advanced to third on a Tyler Giesen double and scored on a Jake Hemann sacrifice fly. 

The Lakers got in the run column in the fourth inning. Mason Conrad tripled to the right center field gap and scored on a Tucker Alstead sacrifice fly.

Joe Grote went deep to left field, a two run shot to get the Lakers to within a run in the fifth inning. 

The Lakers knotted up the game at four in the sixth inning. Porter Sartor reached on an error, was sacrificed to second by Grant Koch and scored on a broken bat flare single to right field by Zander Fitzsimmons.

In the Bulldogs seventh, they were able to get the lead back. With two outs on a grounder to third, Michael Beckius avoided a tag allowing Jake Hemann to score to put the Bulldogs back on top.

1. Joey Grote- Faribault: In my best Glen Sonmor, I'm going the homer route in selecting the stars of the game. Time to give the Lakers some flowers. Grote went 2-5 with a two run home run that put the Lakers back in the game. 

2. Egan Bonde-Faribault: It was a tough first inning for Bonde, but he settled in and gave the Lakers a chance in the game allowing two runs from the second through the seventh innings. With the Lakers having a day game tomorrow, it helps to only have to use two arms to get through the game.

3. Zander Fitzsimmons-Faribault: Although he only collected a hit tonight it was a big one, an RBI single to tie the game at four. Fitzsimmons has been consistent all season for the Lakers and has been rewarded by being moved up to the lead off spot.

In a game with several twist and turns, it was a throwing error on a bunt attempt in the last of the ninth that walked off the Lakers on Thursday night in Hastings.  The Hawks got on the board first in the second inning as Johnny Tegland walked with one out and scored on the front end of a two run home run by Cooper DeSutter. In the Lakers fifth, they got on the board without a benefit of a hit. Two Lakers batters reached on walks. Tucker Alstead grounded to shortstop, but a throwing error on the relay to first allowed a run to score. Zander Fitzsimmons followed with the first Lakers hit of the night but Alstead was thrown out trying to reach third base.  Hastings regained their two run lead in the last of the fifth on a Jack Seleski RBI single. Faribault Lakers Baseball: Lakers rally late to defeat Dundas 9-8

Dundas is known as the Town of Baseball. Rightfully so. The pedigree and tradition of Dukes baseball in Dundas is known and respected by all those in the amateur baseball community. On Wednesday night however, the Town of Baseball become Upset City as the Faribault Lakers knocked off the Dukes scoring a run in the eighth to take the lead and holding on to win 9-8 Grant Koch, fresh off of his high school career, got his first start on the mound as a Laker. The Dukes nicked him for a run in the first inning. Tate Journell walked, stole second base and scored on a one out single from Kyle Hrncir. The Lakers bounced back in the second innings. Mason Conrad led off with a single and advanced to third on a Dylan O'Neil double. Back to back singles by Koch and Zander Fitzsimmons gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead.  In the last of the third, the Dukes took the lead back. Journell reached again, on a single. Faribault Lakers Baseball: New Market ends Lakers season 17-15

In a  season that we knew was going to be challenging with the Lakers going through a youth movement, then was made even more challenging as the Lakers were deemed to be a Class A team, the challenges kept mounting, right into the playoffs. Through it all the Lakers never outwardly complained and gave it their all, right till the end in a two run loss to Class A powerhouse New Market.  Faribault jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the strength of a Tucker Alstead 2nd inning run scoring double. Followed in the 3rd with an RBI groundnut by Aiden Tobin. The Muskies though hit paydirt in their half of the inning. An infield single and a bad hop single set the stage for an estimated 290 foot home run by Connor Weed to put the Muskies up 3-2. A Pick Three of errors with two outs and a Dylan O'Neil RBI single gave Faribault the lead back in the fourth, 4-3.
